The Born Loser by Art & Chip Sansom Brutus: I feel my good work around here is not appreciated! Brutus: I deserve a promotion and demand a decision now! Mr. Veeblefester: Very well - you are not getting a promotion at this time. Brutus: Then this is goodbye! Mr. Veeblefester: Oh, Thornapple, wait a moment! Mr. Veeblefester: I just wanted the opportunity to bid you goodbye, as well.
Two truths here, 1. Businesses often over look the value of current employees and how long (and how much) it costs to train a replacement, especially if they can’t keep people and its a revolving door.
My former job, they were spending millions a year on the training budget, but my direct supervisor said they won’t pay more cause training comes out of the training department. She is responsible for her budget in her department and she don’t care how high the training budget goes she isn’t giving anyone raises….big picture would have saved the company money to pay people more and reduce the training budget.
2. My current employer will only give raises if you get a written quote at another job willing to pay more, but problem is to get that you have to agree to go and if you turn it down to keep your current job with more money you just burned that bridge forever.
Managers love this approach, they pay if needed and know that if you do stay you can never leave your current job for the one you just burned the bridge on.
