Apropos of nothing, really … we got the term “lariat” from the Spanish “la riata”, along with “lasso”, from “lazo”, as in “lasso that cow”. Our cowboys anglicized a number of Spanish words, like “vamoose” from “vamos”, and “hoosegow” (jail) from “juzgado” (court), along with many more.
