I do have the benefit of living in Austin, Texas, climate-wise, so no argument from me on your first point. I’m one of those hardcore types that cycled year round when I lived where there is a winter, but I understand that many (most) would not tolerate the cold. (BTW, I assume your -5 was Celsius and not Fahrenheit.)
Still, cycling during the temperate months of the year in the areas that have winter would still represent a significant reduction in gasoline/diesel needs.
As for texting while cycling, I’ve only seen it once. The guy was riding no hands and most certainly did not have his full attention on the road ahead of him. I have no idea if he made it to his destination without crashing…
