GOP policy in a nutshell: Reward Winners, Punish Losers. They think that good people win (in sports, business, whatever) and that only wicked people lose. That this happens in the absence of laws and governments, because it is the natural effect of good or bad character. That when it doesn’t happen, it is because of some specific crime perpetrated by someone who should be found out and punished. In their view the man with the top had must deserve to have what he has, and the homeless man is no doubt there because of his poor (i.e. wicked) performance. In their view only wicked people ask for help, or need it. Life is not a game, but it is a gamble, and, as a Good Book says “I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.” That fortunate should aid the unfortunate, that it is their duty to do so, even through laws of their own making, is, to my way of thinking, simple justice. To many Conservatives it is confiscation and injustice. They think it constitutes the immorality of rewarding losers, and punishing winners. No wonder they get in such a lather about it.
