Our Roots Fela Anikulapo-Kuti (1938-1997) was a voice of radical politics in Africa. Fela was inspired by African-American activist and leader, Malcolm X. Born in Nigeria, Fela was one of Africa's leading music exports to the west. He created his own style of music called Afro beat. Fela's notoriety packed the music houses and clubs in Europe and America and he had robust record sales to match. Fela's hits include Zombie, Suffering and Smiling and Yellow Fever. In 1977 ace saxophonist Fela raised eyebrows by marrying 27 wives in a traditional wedding.
