I’m afraid I have to agree with rikoshay, though I might have expressed it differently…
Only thing I’d add is, a lot of those volunteers come from families with a long tradition of military service, so it’s more tradition and a sense of service (I have to assume) than poverty. This doesn’t deny that the military is one of those fall-back places for the young who can’t get a job. In fact, one of the conservative posters here recommended that the unemployed simply join the military, and the problem would be solved…..
