Two historical events of interest took place in 1937 Russia:
(1)The Soviet Census held on January 6, 1937 which was the most controversial of the censuses taken within the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Because the census results did not meet Stalin’s predetermined and projected higher population to numbers he had presented to the to the 17th Congress of the All-Union Communist Party the results were destroyed and its organizers were sent to the Gulag as saboteurs because the census showed much lower population figures than anticipated.
(2)The Great Purge orchestrated by Joseph Stalin from 1936 to 1938. It involved a large-scale purge of the Communist Party and government officials, repression of peasants, Red Army leadership, and the persecution of unaffiliated persons, characterized by widespread police surveillance, widespread suspicion of “saboteurs”, imprisonment, and arbitrary executions. Whether this represents a census taker or the Great purge or is comparing what happened in 1937 Russia to a current event ongoing today I do not know. Hopefully I/we can acquire that knowledge via some other bloggers out there.
