When I was in high school debate club we took on the drinking age being raised to 21. I’m an army brat. My mom and I were living Colorado. Even after my father retiring and then leaving us (thankfully) we still always lived by posts. We were in Fountain. My high school was in fact Fountain-Fort Carson High. They bused the military kids off post to us. Anyway at the time Colorado was finally giving into federal pressure to raise the drinking age from 18 to 21. I was on the side arguing the idiocy of soldiers being drafted at 18 not being able to drink. They were old enough to die for the country, but not have a beer?! Before the 26th amendment was passed in 1971 the same was true for voting. This was the height of Vietnam. Kids being drafted & sent to a hellhole without the ability to vote for the politicians that were sending them to their deaths. It was insane to consider that! Still irks me. I have no problem with the draft. In fact I believe in compulsory service. It doesn’t have to be the military. I know I could never take another person’s life. The fact that my father is alive out there somewhere says that. If people want to be protected then they should shoulder some of the burden. And now I am rambling. Sorry been up since 2 am.
