Many of us enjoy sports because they’re civilized, entertaining, and a distraction from all the craziness in the world. So, when a player brings their passion for anything other than soccer onto the soccer field while representing the US, it takes away from the reason you’re there and the reason we’re watching. It doesn’t mean you should be hated but it does mean that you’re coming between the brand and the customer. Take your protest anywhere but not on the field and not while wearing the US uniform. The brand is important, just ask Subway sandwiches why Megan Rapinoe is no longer pitching for them.
Putting the protest in context, what if similar demonstrations occurred during other jobs. All non-violent and with some degree of passion shared by others. What if you:
-were a greeter at Walmart and started each greeting with “hope you rode the bus, climate change, you know”,
-were a server at Starbucks and wrote “defund police” on the coffee cups before serving,
-were an NFL player and worn a sticker that said “we will find a cure” in support of cancer research,
Those actions might result in a reprimand and possible termination. By the way, that last one happened to DeAngelo Williams, NFL running back. He was fined.
