Baldo by Hector D. Cantú and Carlos Castellanos for July 18, 2010
Transcript:
Gracie: Papi, what is cultural assimilation? Dad: Hmmm... let me try to explain... Dad: Acculturation is where a group of people, usually ethnic minorities, keep some parts of their culture while adapting parts of the dominant culture. Dad: In assimilation, a group is completely absorbed into the dominant culture, giving up their customs and traditions over time. Dad: This smaller group eventually becomes indistinguishable from the dominant group. Gracie: I think I prefer acculturation. Baldo: Can you pass the jalapeño jam?

I think America is going to change, not Baldo’s family. This is why we eat German hot dogs on the 4th of July We have the day off to go to the Columbus parade The police pulled me over on Cinco de Mayo (or was it seis?) The banks close on MLK day. The Irish don’t get March 17th off, but don’t show on the 18th
MLK was not a foreign import.
