Puns are among my favorite forms of humor! There are those that determine puns to be the lowest form of humor. Here is one of the oldest, and still my favorite example of a pun that could help Jake understand: Long ago a king had a court jester that too often used puns in his displays of entertainment. They became tedious to the king such that he threatened prison to the jester if he did not terminate his use of puns! The jester could not control himself and persisted in making up outrageous puns! The king was incensed and so thoroughly disgusted, he sentenced the jester to hang! On the day of execution, as the noose was about to placed around his neck; a messenger arrived from the king. The message from the king stated that should the jester swear to never resort to puns again he would be pardoned from hanging! The jester responded, “Well, no noose is good noose!” He as hung with a smile on his face!
Sorry, one more: When the “King of the Cowboys” Roy Rogers was a youngster, his family were very poor and money was a premium. One day, his father had worked on neighbor farms and was able to save enough wages to buy Roy a new pair of shoes. Actually the first pair the boy ever had! Roy was very proud and after the first day with shoes, Roy felt the should be left overnight on the porch to “rest”. During the night, a wild cat came along and found the shoes to be irresistible and consumed them! When Roy awoke the next morning, saw the tracks, knew what happened, grabbed his rifle and started tracking! Some hours later he was coming home dragging the culprit behind him and as he passed a neighbor on his way home, the neighbor inquired: “Pardon me, Roy, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?”
