We will be spending this month visiting Portimão, Portugal. Our first stop is Castelo de São João do Arade – “a medieval fortification”
“Fort of Sao Joao do Arade, also known as Castle of Arade, is a spectacular medieval fort perched on a hillock, overlooking the cool blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a part of Ferragudo – a civil parish – situated in the city of Lagoa in Portugal. It was constructed circa 1520 in the Baroque architectural style by an architect named Alexandre Massai”
“The first fortification on the site consisted of a watch tower erected in the reign of King John II of Portugal…The structure of the fort is easily identifiable, with its battlements serving as positioning batteries. It was designed vertically, in order to permit visibility both from its battlements, and from sea. Its height, makes it one of the more interesting features of the structure, permitting observation”
