33 Kite-Eating Tree Comics: Charlie Brown's Shadiest Saboteur
by Caleb GoellnerTrees with teeth aren't to be trusted. If there's anything to be learned from Charlie Brown's repeatedly-foiled kite flying in Charles Schulz's Peanuts, it's a healthy fear/respect of the Kite-Eating Tree.
Charlie Brown's frustrations with getting kites stuck in trees began in 1956, but it wasn't until 1965 that he'd face a literal embodiment of his woes. It even got a name: Kite-Eating Tree. Usually, Kite-Eating Tree interactions were limited to standalone gags, but on more than one instance, the perilous plant's machinations branched out in multi-part storylines -- like the time Charlie Brown bit the tree in revenge and became a fugitive from the Environmental Protection Agency for a month.
Not content to prey on mere kites (and the hopes and dreams of children), the Kite-Eating Tree occasionally munched on other edibles, like Schroeder's piano or Linus' blanket. Of course, those meals were served by Lucy.
In the end, Charlie Brown's hatred for the tree was tempered and he'd willingly feed it a kite. He blamed the act of kindness on a tender heart born of winter, but it's plausible that he realized he had kite trouble with other kite-eating entities, like sewers.

That sentence about the EPA was so important, they put it in the story twice (see the first and second paragraphs).
