The Boondocks by Aaron McGruder for July 09, 2014
Transcript:
Jasmine: Uh, excuse me...hi. I just moved in across the street. My name is Jazmine. What's yours? Huey: Huey. It's good to have more black people around. Jazmine: Um...gee, um, why...why would you think I was...um...black? Huey: Well first of all, Mariah, your afro is bigger than mine. Jazmine: I don't have an afro - my hair is just a little frizzy today. Huey: Angela Davis' hair was "a little frizzy." You have an afro. Jazmine: I do not!! And who is Angela Davis??!!!
These exchanges between Huey and Jazmine stirred up a lot of controversy when they first ran. McGruder received a lot of angry backlash from all directions, with many people assuming that Huey’s absolutism was the author’s point of view on biracial identity, or that Jazmine’s insecurities regarding her heritage were intended as some kind of universal blanket statement.
