Joanie: I'm sorry, but Rick's not home. May I ask who's calling? Voice: Halberstam. David Halberstam. I want to interview him for my next book... Joanie: Rick? For a book? What sort of books do you write, Mr. Halberstam? Halberstam: I write tomes. Tomes about power. Tomes like "The Best and the Brightest," and "The Powers That be." They're massive books, big, bery big, towering best sellers, 750 pages, sometimes more, that's how big they are. The kind of books about which men like to say, "I own them." Joanie: Oh. do these men read them? Halberstam: Very few. Only the best.
Pet peeve: tome (from a Greek word meaning ‘cut’) properly means one volume of a longer work.
