Mark: Dr. Dan, I wonder if you could explain to our listeners what "gentrification" means... Asher: For sure. it works like this: a developer buys a dilapidated house in a depressed neighborhood. He fixes it up and resells it to a young, middle-class couple. This encourages other "gentry" to buy into the neighborhood, and before long, a fantastic real estate market booms where none existed befor! Mark: And what happens to the low income tenants who are displaced? Does anyone care? Asher: Sure, we do. These people are very important to the whole process! Mark: They are? Asher: Of course. They move on to devalue other properties. Without them, the whole system falls apart.
