I am PC and there is a purpose to it. Most of the times, the accommodation can be made easily, but it can be taken to hilarious extents.
Dear Sir and/or Madam as the case may be, is kind of a clumsy way to start a letter.
My pet peeve is African-American (or any other -American). Not every person of apparent African descent is an American or even want’s to be an American. The person could be African-Canadian or African-Mexican or African-Chinese or, now get this, just plain African!
I have a friend who used to fit this category. Today, I guess you can call her African-American, because she is now a citizen.
I’m OK with just being called an American. People don’t feel compelled to call me Polish-Irish-American. To make a distinction for other than European-looking Americans is somehow racist to me.
