Thirtyish years ago, a colleague from work – a single mother of two boys, 13 and 15, asked me if I would have “The Talk” with them. Sadie and I had no children, so I wasn’t probably the best person for the job, but I understand how awkward it would be to have that talk with Mom. So I gave it a go, sat them down together and brought up the subject – I learned so much! ;-) Seriously, they listened intently – asked intelligent questions, after which they thanked me and we shook hands like the men we were. Progress report: Both married nice ladies, the eldest’s daughter just graduated from Cal Poly, and the other has four boys – two in university, one in the Navy, and one sailing about the South Pacific – last I heard from him he was in French Polynesia working as a waiter and saving his money to provision his boat for the Indian Ocean. Cool kids. All of ’em.
