Teacher: Now, children---Bring me your compositions. Nancy--How DARE you? ---This paper is BLANK. What Mark do you think I should give you for this? Nancy: How about 100 per cent for neatness?
In panel two I see a fascinating treatment that Bushmiller has given to Nancy’s eyes. I can’t clearly recall seeing a lot of those kinds of eye treatment in Ernie’s strips. Perhaps I should be looking more closely.
Those Nancy-eyes in panel two caused me to notice that with this strip, Bushmiller was exploring & browsing eye brows.
For panel one, I think I may have spotted another Bushmiller rarity. The child shown on the far-right side of panel one has at least two teeth!
I enjoyed the flip-book effect of alternating my gaze back-and-forth across panels two and three while referencing the treatment that Ernie gave the teacher’s profile. The differences between the look of Nancy’s eyes in panel two and panel three is spooky while gazing left-to-right, right-to-left across the pair of panels.
As for panel four, I think the panel is the most surreal panel I’ve seen this year. I’ll start with the word ‘percent’ split into the pair of words, “per cent” in the dialogue balloon.
Moving along, six plewds, a white, floating, distorted-looking rectangle, a high-contrast plaid pattern contrasted with a vertical pattern on the desktop, and Nancy, appearing to be tasting her right index-finger.
This strip helped me to obtain a deeper understanding of why Ernie Bushmiller was almost always a cartoonist but was never a parent.
