In the famous “Wanna Be a Member?” Betty Boop cartoon, the weird cult member who unmasks here as Oona Goosepimple was… under that hood… Betty Boop. YouTube has videos of early human inspirations for the character who became Betty Boop, Helen Kane and Esther Jones (aka Little Esther). The cultists were portrayed as having lit candles on top of their heads that melted down into likenesses of the Pac-Man ghosts.
And, just incidentally, Betty was portrayed as an anthropomorphized dog. Droopy dog ears and all. In her very next cartoon appearance, she was fully human and the dog ears had morphed into the iconic dangling earrings.
