Well, ya know, back in the days of Rockefeller or Dirksen, the candidates were usually and actually nominated at the party nominating conventions by men (they always were…) who had actually looked those candidates in the eye, many times, and had their true measure. The candidates mostly didn’t have to go through a two year charade of personal humiliation and debasement that almost no competent and sane person would endure. In many ways, the current primary system of selecting nominees is even less democratic that it was 50 years ago, and certainly gets us poorer quality candidates overall. More’s the pity.
