I lived in a place where almost everybody had some sort of nickname, on the order of (but these are fake) Red Truck Bob, Catfish Annie, Karen Manycats, etc.
Sometimes that made for a lengthy moniker, but it worked.
You could identify people without knowing or remembering full names — and I understood how last names came about, as the nickname was often passed to the children, ie Joe Newboat’s kids would become Josh and Mariah Newboat.
