On the Blackfoot reservation there was a man named Crow Talker. He got the name because crows always hung around him. When he was working on a motorcycle or something and he dropped a shiny lug nut, one of the crows would fly down, pick it up and give it back to him instead of stealing it. Same for shiny sockets. They also appeared to talk to him. A crow would fly up and squawk and cackle at him then he’d say “someone coming up the road” and five minutes later, someone arrived who was totally out of sight behind the hill when he said it. When he rode his motorcycle around the crows would follow him and take turns sitting on his shoulders and riding for a bit. The crows also told him where the game was when he was hunting and he always gave them a portion of the carcass as a reward. In the summer he’d make his garden hose spray so the crows could get a bath and cool off. They never crapped on his truck or motorcycle. They also told him when bad weather was coming even if the sky was clear at the time.
