LOL, I think Phil has always been black, or at least part black. Unfortunately, B&W comics don’t allow good options for grays. If you look at the color strips, you will see that Phil is more Will Smith than Idris Elba in his complexion. So I conclude his skin is coming out white in this high-contrast clip.

Why do we (the majority of Americans) focus solely, or at least significantly, on skin color when it comes to the black/white divide? Do comics like this reveal the faulty social construct that is race?
Mathematician Kathryn Johnson is black, but she “passed” sometimes when she worked for NASA in the moon exploration hayday and “passes” more now she is pale with age and wears a very short hair cut typical of both black and white elderly ladies.
