It’s appalling, but it does seem to be the case — the French Revolution alone provided plenty of anecdotal evidence. It doesn’t always happen, of course, but on occasion a severed head can be seen, for several (long!) seconds, to change facial expressions, and even move its mouth as if trying to speak. But any conscious thought or pain would fade swiftly, due to loss of oxygen to the brain..If you have to die (and who among us doesn’t?), I can think of worse ways to go.
