In theory, I can’t see a problem (and I was an engineer). Look at any CD player and you’ll see that the casing and read-head only extends from the case onto the centre. The rest of the CD is exposed… The entire drive is enveloped so as to protect the innards, but playable on a clear, flat, level surface (but not in the pocket (or pokket), obviously)…

Back in the 60s we had vinyl players like that…
