The whole theory reminds me of the Diana Wynne Jones novel THE HOMEWARD BOUNDERS, in which a young man discovers that there are multiple worlds, and they are all part of a board game being played a mysterious higher species. He becomes a random game piece, a discard, that can move between game-boards (worlds) and he collects companions who are in the same position.
