I remember seeing a book in the bookstore back in the 1980s, “How To Speak Southern” (or something like that). I didn’t get it because – who actually thinks there is just ONE WAY to speak Southern?
I speak the mild form of Southern found among long-time residents of Central Florida, and I can switch to the thick drawl of a Carolina back-country belle whenever I please. But I never mastered Virginian, Georgian, Southern Florida, Florida Panhandle, Mississippian, or the Kentucky version, and if you hear me attempt Cajun, you might want to leave.
NOBODY speaks ‘Southern’.
So, is Minnesotan really a state-wide thing? I’ve never been, sadly.
