Irving: Later. Later. Later. Later. Irving (From phone): Hi, honey. You called? Cathy: Yes! Can you believe what happened to me?!! Irving (From phone): What happened? Cathy: I left you a long voice mail about it. Irving (from phone): I didn't listen to the voice mail. It was faster to just return the call. Cathy: Why do I bother leaving voice mails if you don't listen to them?? Irving (from phone): I told you I'd be tied up in a meeting. Didn't you get my e-mail? Cathy: I saw there was an e-mail from you, but I didn't read it. Irving (from phone): Why do I write you e-mails if you don't read them?? Cathy: If you'd listened to my voice mail you would know why I couldn't stop and read your e-mail!!! ...Sorry. This is crazy! Look at the message we're sending to each other! Irving (from phone): Can't look now, got to go! I'll save it and look later!
If it is not urgent, send me an email. I will get around to reading it sometime today or tomorrow. If it is urgent, phone me. If I do not answer that means I am not available but feel free to leave me a voice mail which I will listen to whenever I finally notice the light flashing on the phones in the house – except for the one on my desk that is not tied to the home phone system so it does not flash. I will notice the light flashing when I sit down to read before going to bed – which will be sometime after midnight so don’t expect a return call until tomorrow anyway. If it is really critical that you talk to me now, call the police and tell them where to find me. Oh, not important enough to involve the police? Then it is not important enough to interrupt what I am doing. (Used that last one to explain to my wife how to reach me in an ‘emergency’ when I am in a theatre setting up lighting when I told her I did not carry my cell phone when climbing ladders or up on the catwalk focusing lights.) For some reason I have never considered myself to be important enough to have to be available all the time to anyone who calls.
Enjoy the day – it is Sunday after all.
