“Gorm” is a verb that means “to gawk, to stare or gape”. “Gormless” is an adjective that means “wanting sense, stupid”. Both words are British slang.

My mom, with her New England accent, always pronounced “Gormless” like “Gom-less”. I didn’t realize until I was an adult, the letter “r” was in there.
