I used a knife and drilled a hole in my fingernail once to relieve the pressure after smashing my thumb

That’s why they call a hammer a “thumb detector.”

I think a straight pin would work better.

When I heard this many years ago the instruction was to put the paper clip or pin through the nail instead of under it.

Always wear protective gloves when using a hammer.

I carefully drill through the fingernail to relieve the pressure. Whatever method you use it sure feels good when you relieve the pressure. It’s instant pain relief.

You can hold a nail with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Just sayin’.

No wonder my last box of paper clips was so expensive! They are now medical devices.

I very similar thing happened to me. I accidentally CRUSHED the end of my left middle finger. The flesh under the nail eventually turned black, and some time later the whole nail came off. But sure enough, a new nail grew in to replace, and now the finger is good as new. The body’s regenerative powers can’t be underestimated.

The amount of pain relief you get when you stick that paperclip is Amazing! It takes a couple weeks for the nail to fall off. And BOY is it GROSS!!!

Yikes! Stick a paper clip under your fingernail? That would hurt more than hitting your finger with a hammer.

I’ve gotten splinters under my nails, and it may have been the worst pain I’ve ever felt.

As an OR nurse, this strip gives me chest pain.

Marcy is gowned and gloved, implying that she’s scrubbed in and sterile, so she is contaminating her gloves being on her phone. She’s not wearing eye protection, though.

If she’s not in sterile attire, she should be attending to her patient and surgeons and thus shouldn’t be on her phone.

Yeah, the last panel is supposed to be funny. Sure. /sarc

Dremel tool, fine cutting burr. Carefully open a hole directly above the blood under the thumb nail. Blood drains, pressure is relieved, pain is ended. WITHOUT shoving something under your thumb nail.

Surgeons generally have available needles a good deal sharper than a paperclip…

I thought today is St. Patrick’s Day, but I’m seeing the same comics as yesterday. Maybe it’s actually Groundhog Day.
