How right you are Jumbo, a casual presentation of an unemloyed (or “underemployed”) Sam Catchem, milling in the curious crowd and wondering why fate has delt such an unkind blow (?)
Could this be Locher’s way of ‘sticking a finger’ to US for the caustic but largly accurate reviews we’ve been giving his careless work here ?
Some years ago I believe (or would like to ;) he did the same thing using a villain name - “Syd Sacks.” (late 1998), … coming on the heels of a series of unfavorable “critiques” in “artickes” in a D.T. “FAN” magazine I knew he read.. The technique was clever and rather subtle. By the simple change of a “vowel” the rogues name became a ”message” …

Perhaps he thought that was somehow cunning and brilliant as the PUNS he makes with such frequency in the strip these days (?)
