Laugh all you want about breakdancing ( I know I am! ) but for those of you die-hard jocks who don’t know the history of the modern Olympic Games, they used to award medals for Art! Yes, Art!
“Art competitions were part of the modern Olympic Games from 1912 to 1948. These competitions were part of the original intention of the Olympic Movement’s founder, Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin, and medals were awarded for works of art inspired by sport in categories like architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture.”
Richard Globensky, a former warehouse assistant at the Augusta,Ga, Masters course, pleaded guilty in Chicago. For the past 10 years, he had been stealing objects from the clubhouse and selling them on the memorablia “black market”. he supposedly earned more than 5 million dollars.
Remaining free on bail, he could be sentenced to as much as 10 years in prison
Snowboarding events have turned out to be my favorite kind at the Winter Olympics, so maybe I’d enjoy breakdancing events more than I anticipate, though probably not enough to get me to tune in the Summer games to begin with.
I saw a theatrical presentation featuring some of the top breakdancers in Canada. They were astounding , combining gymnastics, acrobatics, ballet, balance beam, broad jumps and running into an amazing display of athletic ability.

The lines separating sport, game, and art are indeed blurring. And if breakdancing is in, why not ballet and other forms of dance?

I can see where breakdancing could have as much legitimacy as an Olympic event as synchronized diving/swimming.
