When Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak wanted to register the name Apple Computer, they ran into a problem. There was already a company named Apple, Apple Records, owned by the Beatles.
The Beatles allowed them to use the name Apple as long as they agreed to never go into the music business.
A few years later, Apple developed the Macintosh Computer, and it was not long before they realized that it could be used very effectively in the music business.
So they buried a little protest in the alert sound. It was the sound of three muted marimba keys being struck simultaneously. They called the sound, “Sosumi.”
Many years ago in Manhattan there was a chinese place on 3rd ave called Wok. It was prosperous and opened a 2nd place a little further south and east on 1st ave. The were going to call it ‘East wok’ (I swear this is true) but wanted to save money on the sign so when it opened my g/f and I noticed the new place was ‘E.Wok’ and ever after i imagined the chef, cleaver in hand, running out of the kitchen chasing an escaped little furry biped.
It could have been worse, a writer i know, when it was suggested, said she at once thought the entire cooking staff were said furry bipeds.

This was a really funny strip. Sosumi, a sushi bar for lawyers. Now that’s rich.

The classic Apple start up sound of that name was close to the Windows sound. Thus the name.
