Sheepy looks confused. “Why is he herding on the wrong side of the fence?” Sheepy wonders.

Very true. That’s why border collies and similar breeds are used to rid golf courses and other public places of geese. They keep herding the birds until they get fed up and fly off.

They also herd small children, sometimes to the annoyance of the herdees.

My kids had two ducks, a rabbit and a dog. Their dog was a border collie mix. Each night that dog would herd the ducks and rabbit into their pens. Never taught him….

When my folks were living on a dairy farm, Edna, my married sister, gave them a rat terrier named Marky. That was because the dog didn’t like Cecil. Although he had never been around cows, he was like a natural cow dog. I was home in the summers. In the early evening, we would go across the road to the day pasture to get the cows. Marky made sure the cows go in line to go through the gates. When my older brother was staying with the folks, he would set his alarm to get up before Dad did so he would go to the dairy barn to set up the milking machines. Marky slept by his bed. I don’t know how the dog told time; but they said, “A few minutes before the alarm went off, Marky would pull on Lewis’ covers. If Lewis didn’t get up after a few tugs, he would pull the covers onto the floor.”

Have a border collie, got him from the shelter. He used to like to chase the goats instead of herd. But he found his place here, we have a full house and he still likes to herd the other dogs and cats.

My daughter thought she adopted a rescue border collie. It turned out to be almost entirely husky. I don’t think she herds, but she’s pretty smart and the family loves her. She definitely looks like a border collie.
