Reminds me so much of Dante, the now 9 years old Lab mix. He likes to gaze at birds. Our first dog, Snoopy a Sprocker Spaniel (a truly gorgeous black and white sports Spaniel) loved chasing butterflies, when he was a puppy he’d chase the shadows and pounce on them as if trying to catch them. He also would “hunt” birds and jump like a spring to greet you. The rest of the time he would go “British”: sit outside in the shadow exactly like one of those old marvel lion statues and move only his head to gaze and get back in pose. Quite a “gentleman’s dog”.
I’ve got a milkweed “snack bar” just outside my bedroom window. Monarchs and other butterflies have been frequenting it every summer for at least the past 45 years, and probably a lot longer, since it was already here when I first moved onto this property.
My next door neighbor put in a butterfly garden that I can see out my window, but he can’t. I asked him if he would like to plant the same flowers on the side of my house so he could see them too from indoors. We just don’t see anywhere near the amount of butterflies that we used to. This morning, I saw 9 male turkeys hanging around in my backyard. They will be blocking roads again soon. I haven’t seen the females yet.
One October, coming home from physical therapy after my knee replacement I got to witness two butterflies mating. The female was on top, and her wings propelled the pair when they changed positions. It was so great.
In my area (this is Georgia, U.S.), we have Monarchs, but the type I see the most of is Spicebush Swallowtails. They are mostly black with a bit of blue on their wings. Then there is another type that I’m unable to idemtify that is solid lavendar (not purple).

If there’s nectar, it could be a drinks bar.

Little Sirius enjoying sweet smells and meeting butterflies for the first time-so sweet, so simple. What a lovely comic.

There’s plenty of nectar in those hyacinths to go around, as long as Kate doesn’t pick them all.
