Maya couldn’t afford a wig, so she made the next best thing.

In her later years, Rapunzel lost her looks and her figure. The prince left her and their two kids for a younger blonde with less costly hairdressing bills. She returned to the tower where she was once imprisoned, but having put on weight she wouldn’t fit through the window opening, anymore. And anyway, the tower in the meantime had gone condo, in which case she couldn’t afford the annual association fees.

Her hair continued to grow, however … but developed split ends that had to be constantly trimmed so that it never again reached its former luxuriant length. For some years she had sold her excess golden hair for wigs … until it started to turn a dingy gray. She could have sold it for faux Spanish Moss but had too much pride to do so.

Sad to say, unlike many fairy-tale women her life did not have a happy-ever-after ending. She died in poverty, alone and in Grimm circumstances, the Brothers having cheated her on the fair rights to her story … as did, in later years, the producers for the ‘60s musical, “Hair”, who did not even acknowledge her inspiration.
