For whatever reason, it’s only been within the last 4-5 years that my paper even started running LUANN, and up until then, the only other character I ever heard of with that name was Luan Loud from THE LOUD HOUSE. Then again, strangely, there’s a number of really popular, long-running comic strips that were absent from my paper for the longest time, with another prominent example being PEARLS BEFORE SWINE; up until then, I only knew about it from that bizarre arc in GET FUZZY (my personal favorite newspaper comic) where Darby Conley was shipped unpublished PEARLS BEFORE SWINE strips by mistake, and he just lazily pasted Bucky and Satchel over the characters and sent those into the syndicates, while Stephan Pastis attempted to contact him about the matter. On the flip side, there have also been popular comics that my paper used to run but no longer do, such as SHERMAN’S LAGOON – I had no idea that strip was still in publication, I just assumed it ended long, long ago. I think MOTHER GOOSE & GRIMM (another childhood favorite of mine) is another one my paper dropped as well. Go figure.
Either way, I’ve enjoyed reading LUANN for the most past these past 4-5 years; as a lot of you know by now, I tend to favor the arcs that actually feature Luann and/or Bernice, and actually do something with them, as opposed to the soap opera at Moony U. – which I am so glad they G&K haven’t been doing too much of lately like they were for a while there.
Happy Anniversary Luann, and congrats Greg and Karen Evans, thank you for bringing us such an enjoyable comic strip for these past 40 years!!
P.S. This Sunday’s title panel was, appropriately, the, “I HOPE YOU’RE ALL JEALOUS!” punchline from the very first LUANN strip.
I’ve read this strip from the beginning and always enjoyed it. In some ways the teenage Luann was like reliving my own teenage years. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations! I started reading Luann in the mid-1980’s when it ran in the NY Post, lost track for a while and rediscovered your strip on Go Comics around 2010. Nice to get up to speed via Luann Againn. Keep going G & K!
Happy Luanniversary! It’s amazing that Luann is still here and that her stories continue to be enjoyed by readers from all over the world every day. I really want to thank Greg and Karen Evans for this strip, that I love immensely and with whom I share the same age. Let’s hope they can continue it for many, many more years.
I started reading Luann in the fall of 2022. I read through the entire archive in a matter of weeks. Don’t know if it was that or finally getting a good nights’ sleep, but I got out of the funk I had been in for the previous twelve months. Thank-you Evanses and here’s to many more.
Happy 40th anniversary Luann, Greg and Karen! Thank you for all the laughs and drama that keeps us coming back for more! I’ve be. A fan since practically the beginning and will be forever!
Thank you both for your video message. It’s so nice to meet you! Leaving the messed up ending helps us all feel more comfortable with our own foibles, just like Luann. Thanks, and happy anniversary! PS – I’d like to know if your real family has its own “Puddles”??
Been a fan since day one. Early Luann reminded me of my daughter when she was that age. They have both morphed into adults, Luann now being a young adult and my daughter being in her early 50s. I miss them both but time marches on.
THANK YOU Greg, and Karen, for your fun, heartwarming, sometimes zany reflections of life! It has been fun to see the characters grow, the new characters expand the lives of our beloved family in new and rich ways (even those we would like to see jump off a cliff), and just get a good laugh (or can’t wait to see what happened!) over coffee every day. Also, thanks for the Luann Fan pages. See you at Comic Con!
Oh my goodness! Your daughter is a beauty Greg, my first born, daughter, was born the year this strip was created. Makes me feel connected in a way. Congratulations for 40 years of doing what you love! And thank you for listening to your readers (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Wow! I’ve only popped in, out, and back in again. I clipped and saved a few strips when she was a teen and Gunther kissed her, and she was surprised that he was so good at it. Gunther: “I’m a jelly donut?!”
est congratulations to Greg, Karen and Betty!. We look forward to much more of the tale. The How Luann Began story — see link provided in today’s strip , folks — is a story of irrepressible creativity. (I mean, freelance robot operator?)
One question — how did the six-year-old Karen react to being fast-forwarded into the thirteen-year-old Luann? (Aside from eventually joining the business.)
Luann at 53 looks pretty darn good to me, and she’s still a good bit younger than I am (actually I’m just 5 years younger than Greg). She looks like Nancy, especially in the last strip, and of course that is fine and makes sense. As some have commented the past, Nancy is the second best looking woman in the strip and outshines most of the 20-ish women, so I guess Luann is finally having her day (even if that makes her a bit of a “late bloomer”).
Happy 40th Anniversary LuAnn – you got me through some tough times as a teenager and I’ve been with you from the beginning. My mom introduced me to your comic strip and it was so cool to have someone to relate and look up to. Here’s to another 40 years! Candice
Wow can’t believe it’s been 40 years. I remember reading this comic in the LA Times comic section while I was still in college, and amused at Luann’s crush on Aaron Hill. Time flies. Thanks Greg (and Karen) for the giggles over the years.

Everyone should check out the little Youtube message they put on their luannfan page.
They did a weeks worth of strips where she’s 53 years old (13 Going On 53). They’re Great! =)

I went to Luannfan.com and there was not even one mention of Monstro, which is obviously a grave oversight.
